Savvy Spring Cleaning Requires a Smart Action Plan

The old saying is that “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.”

With all the ice and rough winter weather we had at the beginning of the month, let’s hope that the second part of that saying proves to be true. Further, bad weather usually makes us drag more dirt than usual into our homes so let’s be really smart about how we do our spring cleaning this year! Follow these tips and you’ll make your spring cleaning easier and more efficient than ever before.

Tip #1: Plan.
You are going to war against dirt and grime inside your home, don’t proceed without a master plan. Compile a list of everything you want to accomplish; we’ll have more info on this in our fourth tip. As you scan your “to-clean” list, be sure you have all the tools, materials and cleaning solutions you’ll need to accomplish your goals. Be sure to have an abundance of cleaning cloths (microfiber recommended) because if you use a grimy cloth you are no longer a dirt “remover” you become a dirt “transfer-er.”

Tip #2: Enlist help.
Unless you live by yourself, there are others in your household who have brought in the dirt; they need to help you spring clean. Give assignments to everyone and don’t let them off the hook. If you try to do it yourself it will take longer, it may not get done as well (or finished) and it will probably put you in a bad mood, which is the opposite of what we want to accomplish. You should be beaming – just like your home – when the cleaning is complete.

Tip #3: Work from top to bottom.
Stress this to everyone: start cleaning at the top of rooms and work your way down. That way any dislodged dirt that falls to the floor will be swept up during your final cleaning step. If you clean a ceiling fan last, you’ll have to go back and vacuum again. When you find yourself going over a surface a second time, you did something wrong the first time. Don’t do that, your time is too precious.

Tip #4: Brace yourself for the major items.
Spring cleaning is all about dealing with areas and items in our homes that we tend to ignore for most of the rest of the year. These items should be on your list for inspection and/or cleaning:

  • Carpets
  • Drapes
  • Blinds
  • Upholstery
  • Woodwork
  • Walls
  • Windows
  • Welcome mats

Some of these items can be professionally cleaned and some have special cleaning machines that you can rent at various places around town. Although you may think that your carpets and drapes look fine, remember that keeping them clean makes them last longer. Also, we don’t often notice how dirty they have become until we see them clean again!

If possible, have professionals clean as many of these items as possible; again your time is valuable.

Now that you have a good overview of the best way to successfully tackle this year’s spring cleaning, we wish you good luck, strong backs and plenty of clean rags!
